Written by Jack Bullock and Anthony Maiello, level one of the method is comprised of books for all the primary band instruments, as well as electric bass and guitar. Videos are also available for each instrument family. Motivational aspects are emphasized, such as using frequent duets, rounds and popular tunes, as well as classical, traditional, folk, and other songs just for the fun of it. Most of all, the level one book can be completed in just one year, which encourages students to want to learn more. Lessons are carefully sequenced, and include: in-depth rhythm study, consistent reinforcement of topics newly presented, and theory exercises. There are also three sets of pieces designed to be used as concert sets. Rico Alto Saxophone Reeds - Strength 1 1/2 Item number 2100036DP, $14.95 The standard Rico reed is the type of reed that we recommend for most beginning students. The reeds are good quality, without being too pricey.   Reeds are typically available in strengths of 1 through 5 (some brands label their reeds as Soft, Medium Soft, ... through Hard). In general, the lower the number, the easier it is to play most notes. The down side, is that the lower number reeds just don't sound as nice, and make it harder to hit high notes.   As a general rule, we recommend reeds with a strength of 2 (Soft) for people just getting started, and strength 2 1/2 (Medium Soft) for people who have played for a year (less time if they take lessons). The harder reeds should only be used after using the next softer size of reed for six months to a year, or at the recommendation of a private instructor or band director.
