Todd Isler - You Can Ta Ka Di Mi This!

75 pages, Item number 1400181DP, $24.95

The South Indian syllable system is world famous. It uses seven syllables to create music. The syllables used are Ta, Ka, Di, Ki, Ri, Mi, and Thom. The book is a rhythmic counting book using these syllables, signs, and gestures of the South Indian people. Instrumentalists who are familiar with the phrase "you can't play it until you can sing it" know the method of this book. It contains many different rhythmic examples for the instrumentalist to sing and internalize. From there, they will be able to translate the examples to their instruments. It is a great book that focuses on counting rhythms using various syllables. A CD is included so you can hear, rather than just read, the lessons in the book.

Rico Alto Saxophone Reeds, Box Of 10
Rico Alto Saxophone Reeds - Strength 1 1/2
Item number 2100036DP, $14.95

The standard Rico reed is the type of reed that we recommend for most beginning students. The reeds are good quality, without being too pricey.

Reeds are typically available in strengths of 1 through 5 (some brands label their reeds as Soft, Medium Soft, ... through Hard). In general, the lower the number, the easier it is to play most notes. The down side, is that the lower number reeds just don't sound as nice, and make it harder to hit high notes.

As a general rule, we recommend reeds with a strength of 2 (Soft) for people just getting started, and strength 2 1/2 (Medium Soft) for people who have played for a year (less time if they take lessons). The harder reeds should only be used after using the next softer size of reed for six months to a year, or at the recommendation of a private instructor or band director.
