John Coltrane Plays Giant Steps 70 pages, Item number 1110073DP, $19.95 Legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane recorded the now standard and classic "Giant Steps" in 1959. It became one of the most challenging and important tunes in all of the modern jazz repertoire. It was thought to have existed only in two versions - until 1995, when seven more astonishing takes from those 1959 recording sessions were discovered by producer Joel Dorn in the vaults of Atlantic Records. They were immediately released to an adoring public in 1996 by Rhino Records.   This amazing folio presents note-for-note tenor saxophone transcriptions of all nine existing takes of Coltrane's effort, 96 choruses in all. The compilation includes analysis of the tune and all solos, plus historical background from the period. All this information makes this book a collector's item as well as an important practice and learning tool of the music and technique of John Coltrane. Rico Alto Saxophone Reeds - Strength 1 1/2 Item number 2100036DP, $14.95 The standard Rico reed is the type of reed that we recommend for most beginning students. The reeds are good quality, without being too pricey.   Reeds are typically available in strengths of 1 through 5 (some brands label their reeds as Soft, Medium Soft, ... through Hard). In general, the lower the number, the easier it is to play most notes. The down side, is that the lower number reeds just don't sound as nice, and make it harder to hit high notes.   As a general rule, we recommend reeds with a strength of 2 (Soft) for people just getting started, and strength 2 1/2 (Medium Soft) for people who have played for a year (less time if they take lessons).
